David Miller, on Friday (April 12), said that it is still too early to judge Ravichandran Ashwin’s role as a leader.

The off-spinner Ashwin made a fine start to his captaincy career in the Indian Premier League (IPL), guiding Kings XI Punjab to a thumping win over Delhi Daredevils.

He shuffled his bowlers smartly which never allowed the Delhi batsmen to settle down. As a result, the national capital-based outfit could post a modest total of 166. However, Punjab had gone on to win the game convincingly by six wickets.

But while it is still too early to assess Ashwin’s captaincy, the fans and pundits are not ready to be patient.

Not surprisingly, when David Miller attended a media gathering on Friday (April 13), he was bombarded with questions regarding Ashwin’s leadership skills.

In reply, the Proteas star said Ashwin is very calculated and take his decisions wisely. He also acknowledged it was early days and there would be challenges for Ashwin as the tournament progresses.

“From what I have gathered, he is very calculated. He thinks about the game very well. Every decision he makes, there is a reason why he does that,” Miller told the media.

Miller, who is an exciting figure in the shortest version of the game has a major role to play for the Mohali-based outfit.  With a new captain at the helm, Punjab would be aiming to pounce on the opportunities this time around.

“I’m not sure, you have to wait and see. It has only been one game. I don’t know if it makes so much of a difference if it is a fast bowler or a spin bowler, but so far he has been pretty good,” he added.

David Miller further said the team-management has given the players the freedom to express themselves on the field.

“Not at all, in fact, we have been told pretty early on to trust our games, be exciting. We can be pretty free, and whatever situations that come your way, take them. The last game (chasing against Delhi Daredevils) we didn’t need to be explosive, hit boundaries. We were ahead of the game and we judged it well. Each game (play to) what situation we find ourselves in; try and be flexible in that,” he insisted.
