Riding on Chris Gayle’s century, Kings XI Punjab beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 15 runs to end their unbeaten run this season.
Chasing a huge 194, the Sunrisers suffered a big blow when Shikhar Dhawan was retired hurt after facing just one ball. Wriddhiman Saha also failed to get going, scoring just 6.
The ploy to promote Yusuf Pathan also backfired as the hard-hitting batsman could score just 19. At the end of the fifth over, Sunrisers found themselves reeling at 37 for 2. Captain Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey then steadied the ship. However, neither of them could bat as per the demand as the required rate mounted. They added 76 runs for the third wicket before Andrew Tye dismsised the skipper for 54.
The scoreboard might give an impression that it was a close game but the Sunrisers rarely looked in contention to chase down the big total and were eventually finished on 178 for 4.
Earlier in the game, Gayle turned back the clocks and scored a stunning century to help his side post a daunting 193 for 3.
Sent in to bat first, Kings XI Punjab were off to a slow start as Chris Gayle and KL Rahul struggled to get going early on. At the end of three overs, the scoreboard was reading a modest 13.
Gayle then hit Chris Jordan for a four and a six to break the shackles. The over provided the much-needed impetus as the next two overs yielded 24 runs. At the end of powerplay, the scoreboard was reading 49 for nought.
Rashid Khan then sent back Rahul, ending his 18-ball 21 runs knock to draw the first blood. Mayank Agarwal then began brightly, racing away to 18 off just 8 before being dismissed by Siddharth Kaul. Gayle, on the other hand, was trying to play cautiously.
However, all hell broke loose towards the end as the giant Jamaican showed his true colors and accelerated. He was well supported by Karun Nair.
Kings XI reached the 100-run mark in the 12th over and Gayle completed his fifty off 39 balls in the following over. The carnage began from the 14th over when Gayle hit Rashid Khan for four consecutive sixes. Hyderabad were getting nothing to laugh at during the innings before Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Nair. The wicket ended the stand which was worth 85 runs.
Gayle, nonetheless, soon reached his hundred off 58 balls with the help of 1 four and 11 sixes. He remained unbeaten on 104.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the match:
On paper it was 15 runs between the teams. But, truth be told, @sunrisers were never really in this chase.

This is my problem with Manish Pandey. He can’t get a move on when the team requires it #KXIPvSRH

60 needed in 18 balls. Manish Pandey on roll. Another massive single. #IPL

So, now, if Manish Pandey hits 3-4 sixes and ends up 72 not-out from 42 balls (and SRH lose), would it be counted a decent innings?#IPL2018 #KXIPvSRH

Manish Pandey is one big waste of 11 Crores. With so many economical buys, SRH did a big blunder by picking Pandey for such a big price @SunRisers

Punjab has handed Hyderabad its first defeat in #IPL2018, and also at this very venue for the first time. #KXIP doing the rounds so far. #KXIPvSRH

Manish Pandey's knock has been like that of MS Dhoni. Taken too much time, leaving it too late. Resulting in batsmen getting out at the other end. Works on some, doesn't on many.

As per RBI norms, KXIP should declare Yuvraj Singh an NPA.

Chasing 193 even on a flat track not easy. With Dhawan injured early, Sunrisers badly missing a big striking batsman

Yuvraj is like that foofaji nobody wants at the wedding but they have to invite for old time sake. #KXIPvSRH

RCB not retained KL Rahul…. he scored fastest fifty of the IPL.
RCB not retained Gayle… he scored a fifty and a centuw in just 2 matches.
RCB retained Sarfaraz and bought McCullum…. they are sitting on the bench.#SRHvKXIP

Chris Gayle in his last 5 matches in the T20 leagues has hit 47 sixes!!! #KXIPvsSRH

Only Person More Sad Than Rashid Khan Would Be Virat Kohli For Retaining Sarfaraz Khan Instead Of Universe Boss Chris Gayle. #KXIPvSRH #KXIPvsSRH #SRHvKXIP

Chris Gayle is now running quickly, looking to get his eye in before going for big shots and scoring in back to back games.
Looks like being released by RCB and going unsold in the first 2 rounds of IPL Auction has lifted the curtains off his eyes. #IPL2018

Gayle just ran 2, that too after hitting 4 sixes in a row! And that 2 says more about his motivation than the sixes #KXIPvSRH
— Gaurav Kapur (@gauravkapur) April 19, 2018
Gayle has smashed 6 sixes after playing 13 Rashid deliveries today.
— arfan (@Im__Arfan) April 19, 2018
Every six by Gayle is a tight slap on face of selfish RCB captain Kohli.
