Ever since the off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin affected Mankading to dismiss Jos Buttler, it has become a headliner in the game of cricket. The players across the globe expressed their disappointment for the poor display of the sportsman spirit in a tournament, which will be witnessed by a huge section of people in the world.
Kings XI Punjab got their campaign off to a winning start in the Indian Premier League on Monday but their victory was overshadowed by a controversial run out that took place in the second innings with R Ashwin and Jos Buttler being involved in the heat of things.
Jos Buttler wasn’t running – Josh Hazlewood
Chasing 185 for victory, the Royals were cruising when Jos Buttler was at the crease. Controversy unfolded in the 13th over when Ashwin came into bowl and Mankaded Buttler and appealed immediately. Jos Buttler was seething with rage but he had to walk off after replays confirmed Buttler was short of the crease.
Speaking of the same, Josh Hazlewood quoted that it wasn’t the right way to dismiss the batsman in such a way. Further, he went on to add saying that Buttler wasn’t intentional in moving out from the crease as well.
Hazlewood said he isn’t happy with it. “…I don’t think you should be able to get a batsman out that way, and even in this instance Buttler was hardly out of his crease. He wasn’t jogging with the bowler, he wasn’t running – he was pretty stationary to be honest,” the 28-year-old fast bowler told The Unplayable Podcast.
“I don’t think it should be in the game, to be honest. Maybe if the batters really start to take advantage, then the umpire needs to step in,” added Hazlewood, who is recovering from a back injury.
I wouldn’t want to win a game like that – Pat Cummins
Meanwhile, the fast bowler Pat Cummins quoted that he would never like to win a game like that. However, he admitted the fact that it falls under the rule but on a personal front, Pat Cummins doesn’t want to encourage it.
“The rule is there. But I thought in that instance it was a real stretch of the rule to try and get a wicket. I wouldn’t want to win a game like that,” he said.
Well, it would be interesting to see whether if the same scenario repeats in the future or not. If it repeats in the future, one might see at least a couple of dismissals in that fashion on the scoreboard.
