David Warner, on Sunday, made a grand comeback for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. The southpaw could not play in the last season due to the ball-tampering scandal. Cricket Australia had imposed a one-year ban on him which will end on 29th of this month. The BCCI had then imposed its own sanctions and barred Warner along with Steve Smith from playing in the league last year.
However, the two-year absence from IPL and the one-year absence from international cricket did not make much of a difference as Warner came up with a sublime knock. Warner, who had guided Sunrisers to IPL title in 2016, hit the ground running in IPL during his team’s first clash against Kolkata Knight Riders.
He scored 85 off just 53 deliveries with the help of 9 fours and three sixes against Kolkata Knight Riders. Opening the innings alongside IPL debutant Jonny Bairstow, Warner looked in his elements right from the time Knight Riders skipper asked the visitors to bat first. He added 118 runs with Bairstow in just 65 deliveries to lay the foundation for a big total. He then added 26 runs with Vijay Shankar before missing a well-deserved century by just 15 runs. Warner’s knock helped his side post a big total of 181.
His effort, however, went in vain as Andre Russell’s blistering knock of 49 off just 19 balls helped Knight Riders pull off a thrilling win.
But the 85-run knock helped Warner achieve a major milestone. H broke Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma’s record to become the players with most runs against the Knight Riders in the IPL. He has now amassed 762 runs in 20 IPL innings at an average of 42.33 with two centuries and three fifties. On the other hand, Rohit has 757 runs in 23 IPL innings against the two-time winners.
Here is a list showing most runs against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL:
762 David Warner
757 Rohit Sharma
746 Suresh Raina
615 Chris Gayle
543 Shikhar Dhawan
Warner also broke Gautam Gambhir’s record of most fifties in IPL. He now has 37 fifties in IPL while Gambhir has 36.
