Mumbai Indians (MI) fared poorly in the last season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Rohit Sharma-led side entered the competition as the defending champions and the most successful team in the history of the domestic professional Twenty20 league.
Not surprisingly, the three-time IPL champions Indians were one of the pre-tournament favourites to lift the coveted title. However, as the tournament progressed, it kept on getting clear they would fail to defend their title, this time around.

Mumbai revived their campaign towards the end but eventually crashed out at the league stage. They finished the season at the fifth position with just six wins in 14 games. The Mumbai-based outfit will be desperate to bounce back strongly next season. And, in order to regain the trophy, they have made some smart business in the recently-concluded auction of the IPL.
Before the auction, they had released the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Pat Cummins and JP Duminy. The franchise had a salary cap of Rs 11.5 crore available and eight slots – six India and one overseas.
They eventually bought only six players with veterans Yuvraj Singh and Lasith Malinga being the high-profile names. Both Yuvraj and Malinga were sold for at their base price of Rs 1 crore and Rs 2 crore. Yuvraj was unsold in the first round but saw Mumbai bid for him in the second round.
Apart from Yuvraj and Malinga, Mumbai also roped in Barinder Sran, Anmolpreet Singh, Pankaj Jaiswal and Rasikh Dar.
