IPL 2019: I Am Happy Delhi Capitals is Peaking at the Right Time – Ricky Ponting

Through the recent consistent performances, Delhi Capitals (DC) are now standing at the second position of the IPL 2019 points table. They are very close to qualifying for the playoffs stages, which will be their first playoff qualification since IPL 2012. Their head coach Ricky Ponting is happy to observe that the team is peaking at the right time.

After playing eleven matches in the ongoing IPL season, DC has earned 14 points by winning seven matches (lost four matches). Though they struggled in the early period of this season, they have won five matches out of their last six games.

Talking about their present form, Ricky Ponting said according to IANS, “We have won the last four out of our five matches, and with three more matches to go, I feel we are going in the right direction. I am happy that the team is peaking at the right time, with better communication amongst the group.”

I believe that when you have talented players in your squad, you just keep backing them

The DC coach has enough faith in his regular players. He doesn’t believe to drop the talented players for just a few struggling performances.

Ponting said, “There have been questions asked about where we should have dropped certain players in some matches, but I believe that when you have talented players in your squad, you just keep backing them. You know that we have players who can turn it around quite quickly as it takes just one innings or match to get going in a tournament like this.

Talking about this, Ponting also took the example of Rishabh Pant. The young wicketkeeper-batsman started this season with a brilliant knock of unbeaten 78 runs against Mumbai Indians (MI). But then he mostly struggled to play big innings for his team. In their last match, Pant once again guided the team with another excellent performance.

Chasing down the 192 runs against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Jaipur, Pant scored an unbeaten 78 runs. That innings helped the Delhi franchise to win that match by six wickets (with four balls remaining).

Ponting added, “In the first phase of the tournament, players like Rishabh might have had certain thoughts around his mind about the World Cup selection, but to be honest, that 78* in the first match against Mumbai was what got us the win. I’m glad he found the form again against RR, and what you want from players like him in such a tournament is that they win you three or four matches each throughout the season, and he has certainly won two games for us so far, and if he remains in form, he can get a couple of more wins.”

Ricky Ponting reveals his most enjoyed victory in this season.

The DC coach also revealed the victory which he has enjoyed most in this season. It was against the host side Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Hyderabad (Deccan) on 14th April. DC won that match by 39 runs after making a great comeback in the final moments. After they managed the total of 155/7 (20 overs) in the first innings, SRH was batting on 101/2. But then the host side faced a giant batting collapse and they were all-out on just 116 runs.

Ponting revealed, “I really liked the Hyderabad win because we didn’t do much right in that match but still found a way to win. It was more the way we fought back, probably after their batting power play, they batted second and they were 60-0, and the game was starting to slip away but there were some really good signs in that game from our side.

“The moments when we have been under pressure the most, that is when we have started to fight, and fight under pressure, and one thing that I’ve tried to say to the boys is that we do not lose the match until the last ball is bowled. We saw that in our last match against Rajasthan as well. We fought our way back into the match and then registered the win. But out of the 7 matches that we have won, I think the Hyderabad win has been the most satisfying.”

DC has three more matches left to play in the round-robin stage of the ongoing IPL season. Out of these three matches, two will be played in their home conditions. The Delhi franchise will play their next match on 28th April against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Delhi.
