Former Sri Lankan legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan who is currently the spin bowling mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad has asked left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem to stick to his plan of troubling batsmen with accuracy rather than changing his trait. Nadeem who is a regular feature in India A side and a very successful spinner in Indian domestic circuit hasn’t had consistent success in IPL. He has bowled well in patches but on occasions, the left-arm spinner has gone for plenty of runs.

He was part of the Delhi Daredevils squad (now Delhi Capitals) for 7 years but was used sporadically. Shahbaz Nadeem said that it has been a privilege to work under Muttiah Muralitharan and he has picked up a few things in his bowling in the presence of the former Sri Lankan great.

“Training under Murali has been great. I have picked up a couple of things under his guidance. I am implementing that in my bowling. He has asked me to stick to my stock-ball (spinning away from right-handers), and not to vary much from it,” Shahbaz Nadeem was quoted as saying by PTI.

In recent years, the value of finger spinners in shorter forms of the game has gone down considerably. Wrist spinners are preferred ahead of finger spinners. However, Shahbaz Nadeem feels that style of bowling should be a secondary consideration. He feels consistency is the key rather than the style of bowling.

“I think it doesn’t matter much if you are a finger spinner or wrist spinner, if you are consistent with your performance and are taking wickets you will eventually get a chance wherever you play. You just have to keep performing well,” Nadeem said.

Shahbaz Nadeem is hopeful of getting his maiden national call-up after having a brilliant domestic season for Jharkhand stateside. He returned with exceptional figures of 8/10 in a List A match against Rajasthan last year. Courtesy his heroics, Nadeem was included in the Indian squad for a couple of T20I’s against Windies at home. However, a debut still eluded him.

“I was very happy just to be selected in the national side, it is a big thing for me. I was performing well at that time. If you don’t get a chance to play its okay, it motivates me to do even better and maybe next time I will get a game,” Nadeem further added.

Shabbaz Nadeem was also happy with the fact that Team India head coach Ravi Shastri who was a left-arm spinner in his days came up and gave him some invaluable tips. He further added that the experience in the Indian dressing room was phenomenal and Ravi Shastri was interested in his bowling.

“The experience in Indian camp was very good. Ravi Shastri was interested in my bowling. He told me what to do and what not to do. That helped me. The selectors are also in touch with me. I know the focus is on the World Cup [in 2019]but if I keep performing constantly I will get more chances.”

He concluded by saying that he has been given a role in the team and they have to support Rashid Khan in whatever opportunities they get for the franchise.

“Rashid Khan (a leg-spinner) is the main guy, we have to support him. My role has been defined. Haven’t put a number on how many matches I will get but have been conveyed my role,” he concluded.
