IPL 2019, Match 33: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Chennai Super Kings- David Warner and Jonny Bairstow Made Things Easy for Us Says Kane Williamson

Finally, the winning juggernaut of Chennai Super Kings came to an end when they were defeated quite convincingly by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 33rd match of the competition. The orange army needed a win badly after losing 3 on a trot. In the absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina failed to lead CSK from the front. He was found wanting on several decision-making situations as Chennai succumbed to only their 2nd defeat of the tournament.

Surprisingly stand-in captain Suresh Raina opted to bat after winning the toss. The opening duo of Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis took their time to get going in the first 4 overs. However, they started smashing the boundaries after the 4th over and suddenly the run rate was touching 8. Both Watson and Du Plessis played the situation perfectly and shared a 78 runs stand.

After the loss of Watson’s wicket, it was a downward slide for Chennai as far as run scoring was concerned. Rashid Khan bowled quite brilliantly in the middle overs and finished with exceptional figures of 2/17 in his 4 overs. The last 10 overs were very dodgy for Chennai as they managed to score just 53 runs in the last 10 overs.

Chasing a below-par target, SRH openers David Warner and Jonny Bairstow began with a bang. Warner, in particular, started taking on the Chennai bowlers to the cleaners. There was no calming influence from MS Dhoni and even the bowlers were feeling the heat. The southpaw raced off to a 24 balls half-century as Hyderabad sealed the game in the powerplay itself.

After a 66 runs stand, Warner was dismissed by a good slower delivery from Deepak Chahar. However, by then the target was within touching distance. After Warner’s dismissal, Bairstow came into the act and finished off the match with some lusty blows. He remained unbeaten on 61 of 44 deliveries to see his team through.

Now this is what winning skipper Kane Williamson said at the post-match presentation

Very good performance all around. Obviously, CSK started really well with the bat and we couldn’t take early wickets, but we played really well in the back half and we took our chances in the field as well. We showed that intensity and the chase were superb.

I don’t think the wicket changed too much and what we’ve seen here is that each wicket is different. We always need to adapt to the wicket, and we’ll look to build on this performance.

Rashid (Khan) has been an outstanding performer for us over a number of years and on such surfaces, he is a big threat for the opposition when it’s just holding on. He was brilliant and he was able to take those middle-order wickets. Now every game is different and we need to do the same for our next one.

Warner’s was a match-winning knock along with Jonny (Bairstow). This is the kind of stroke-making we’ve become used to when he comes out to the middle.

Those two have knocked out a bulk of the runs and made it easy for us. We weren’t quite ourselves in the last few matches and we wanted to come back to doing what we’ve always done well. But again, each match is different and we need to build on this one.
