Mumbai Indians continued their winning run after registering a comprehensive 40 runs victory against the Delhi Capitals in the 34th match of Vivo IPL 12. It was a thoroughly comprehensive performance by the three-time champions as they brushed aside the resurgent hosts quite convincingly in the end. The victory was largely built around a terrific all-round performance by the Pandya brothers. They produced a magnificent all-round win to seal a comprehensive victory for Mumbai Indians.

After winning the toss it was Rohit Sharma who elected to bat. The skipper and Quinton de Kock got them off to a flying start. They raced off to 57/0 in the powerplay before the Delhi Capitals bowlers made a terrific comeback by bagging some crucial wickets. In a slow track, the Mumbai Indians batters struggled in the middle overs.

The promotion of Ben Cutting up the order didn’t work as he was dismissed quite cheaply by Axar Patel. It was a good partnership between Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya which took Mumbai Indians past the 150 mark. The Pandya brothers played some terrific cricket. The brothers complemented each other quite brilliantly. While Krunal was more of finesse and touch, Hardik was at his usual best spanking the bowlers all around the park.

Hardik Pandya struck a sensational helicopter of Kagiso Rabada in the final over before his dismissal. Chasing a target of 169, the Delhi Capitals was impressive to begin with. Shikhar Dhawan, in particular, looked in great touch and struck some wonderful shots to get going. He scored 35 of 22 deliveries before Rahul Chahar dismissed him.

Prithvi Shaw was also dismissed by Chahar while Colin Munro was castled by a quick delivery from Krunal Pandya. Rahul Chahar bowled one of the balls of the tournament when he squared up Shreyas Iyer and castled him with a terrific leg break. From there it was always going to be difficult for the Capitals.

The hosts kept losing wickets on a consistent basis and there was no way back for them from there on. Eventually, DC could only manage 128 in their allotted 20 overs. After the victory, Mumbai Indians has leapfrogged DC to hold the 2nd position with 12 points from 9 games. Hardik Pandya was adjudged the Man of the Match owing to his sensational all-round performance.

Now here is what Hardik Pandya said at the post-match presentation

Even I was telling myself that I don’t think I’ve ever hit the ball better. I have been working hard in the nets and it has been coming off well for me. I like to keep the basics straight, even in the death if you keep your shape and hope for bowlers to miss, you can hit hard. I am using my brain well, reading the wicket well in this season. I have five more games to go and then the playoffs, and I hope to keep going like this through the season.
