IPL 2019, Match 39: Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Chennai Super Kings- I Was Prepared for the Last Ball Scenario from the 3rd Delivery of the Final Over Says Mom Parthiv Patel
Chennai Super Kings failed agonizingly close of winning their 8th match of Vivo IPL 12 after losing against the Royal Challengers Bangalore by just a solitary run. Courtesy the victory, Royal Challengers Bangalore has managed to keep their hopes alive in the tournament so far. Earlier in the day, it was a good half-century from Parthiv Patel which took them to a score of 161 runs in their allotted 20 overs.
It was MS Dhoni who took the match very deep and was just a single away from making the scores level. He smashed 24 runs in the first 5 deliveries of the final over of Umesh Yadav to turn the scale in favour of CSK. However, he failed to make contact the final delivery as Parthiv Patel ran out Shardul Thakur at the other end. Courtesy his impressive knock and the match-winning run-out, Parthiv Patel was adjudged the Man of the Match.
AB de Villiers looked in great touch for his brief stay but was dismissed just when he was looking to press on the accelerator. The Chennai Super Kings bowlers were fantastic in the middle overs and never really allowed the RCB batters to get away. Eventually, RCB posted 161 on the board in their allotted 20 overs. Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with 2 wickets each.
Chasing the competitive target, the visiting team lost the first four wickets in no time and it looked the match was all done and dusted. However, a certain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had other plans as he kept the visiting team in the contest till the very end. However, his partners weren’t there to support him enough as CSK fell just a run short of their eventual target.
Dale Steyn provided a sensational start to the RCB bowling as he removed dangermen Suresh Raina and Shane Watson in consecutive deliveries. The delivery to Suresh Raina will be up there among one of the best deliveries of the tournament.
MS Dhoni single-handedly took CSK within touching distance of the victory target. With 26 required of the final over, Virat Kohli handed over the ball to Umesh Yadav. He was under severe pressure after Dhoni took him apart in the first three deliveries. He collected a four and a couple of consecutive sixes to make the calculation 10 of 3.
The CSK skipper then took a sharp double and then smashed another six in the 5th delivery to make the calculation 2 of the final delivery. Virat Kohli in a desperate attempt to save the boundary employed all the fielders in the ropes. Dhoni wanted to take a double and win the match for CSK as there were so many empty areas in the field. However, he missed the delivery and Parthiv Patel ran out Shardul Thakur as they wanted to scamper for a single.
Here is what Man of the Match Parthiv Patel said at the post-match presentation
We tried to play a few shots initially. But we realized it wasn’t the usual 200 wicket. I was batting well, was talking to coaches. It was just a matter of choosing my shots after first six overs. Chose my bowlers to target. Last ball I knew there was only one chance. Was prepared from the third ball that this situation might come. Have been saying that we are a very good side, there’s no doubt about it.
