IPL 2019, Match 42: Rajasthan Royals vs Delhi Capitals- Pant is a Young Lad and He Did a Terrific Job Says RR Skipper Steve Smith
Delhi Capitals went to the top of the points table in Vivo IPL 12 after registering a breathtaking victory courtesy a sensational knock from Rishabh Pant. The southpaw remained unbeaten on 78 of 36 deliveries to get his side through. Earlier in the day, it was former RR skipper Ajinkya Rahane who scored a magnificent century to get Rajasthan to a big score of 191. In the end, it was Pant who sealed the job for DC.
It was Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer who won the toss and opted to bowl. Openers Ajinkya Rahane and Sanju Samson came out to begin proceedings. Unfortunately, Samson was dismissed without facing a delivery as a miscommunication with Rahane cost him his wicket. Despite the wicket, Rahane came out with intent and capitalized on the reprieve by Ishant Sharma at short fine leg when his score was just 10.
From there on it was a sensational display of batsmanship. He literally tormented the DC bowling attack and struck some mind-boggling shots. The slap over long off of the bowling of Kagiso Rabada was one of the shots of the match. He also improvised brilliantly and scooped Chris Morris over the fine leg region for a six.
Ajinkya Rahane went onto score a brilliant century. However, Rajasthan Royals lost some crucial wickets towards the end which prevented their run flow in the last few overs. Eventually, they made 191 with Ajinkya Rahane remaining unbeaten on 105 of 63 deliveries.
Delhi Capitals got off to the perfect start as opener Shikhar Dhawan started off in a blazing note. Prithvi Shaw didn’t find the perfect timing but Shikhar Dhawan made it up for it. The southpaw raced off to a half-century in just 26 deliveries and got DC off to a sensational start. They raced off to a 72 runs partnership in just overs 7 overs before Shreyas Gopal deceived him with a good delivery.
Delhi Capitals also lost the wicket of Shreyas Iyer in quick succession which put them to the backfoot. However, Rishabh Pant had some other ideas. He looked in sensational touch and took RR by the scruff of the neck. He was supported well by Prithvi Shaw who scored 42 before getting dismissed by Shreyas Gopal.
Rishabh Pant struck some audacious shots en route to his unbeaten knock of 78 which helped DC win their 7th game of the tournament. The shot of Jofra Archer in the last delivery of the penultimate over sealed the deal for DC in the end. Ajinkya Rahane despite scoring a brilliant century had to be content with a knock which went in vain in the end.
Here is what Rajasthan Royals skipper Steve Smith said at the post-match presentation
We thought we didn’t finish off well with the bat, they pulled things back with Rabada in the death overs. We couldn’t quite get hold of their bowlers. The wicket played well throughout, one of the best in the tournament. They took our bowlers on in the powerplay and Shikhar played a magnificent knock. Pant is a young lad and he did a terrific job as well. We changed a few tactics,
I didn’t want Gopal to bowl in the powerplay but decided to give him a bowl as the dew was setting in. It’s always hard for the bowlers with the dew around. The wicket stayed the same throughout the 40 overs. You can try and get wickets with your best bowlers or keep them for the death overs. Delhi did that well with Rabada but for us, Archer has bowled well for us throughout the tournament.
