IPL 2019, Match 42: Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Kings XI Punjab- We are Enjoying Our Cricket and Today Was an Example of Having Fun Says Virat Kohli
Royal Challengers Bangalore managed to keep their slim chances intact in Vivo IPL 12 after registering their 4th victory of the tournament. It was also their 3rd consecutive victory which still keeps them in the contention for a playoffs berth. The victory was largely possible due to a special knock from Mr 360 AB de Villiers and a good supporting role from Marcus Stoinis.
The RCB bowlers missed their mark on several occasions. However they were lucky as Navdeep Saini and Umesh Yadav were impressive in the last two overs which helped RCB win their 4th game by 17 runs.
Earlier in the day, it was Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin who won the toss and opted to field. Parthiv Patel and Virat Kohli got the hosts off to a good start. Parthiv, in particular, looked in great touch while Virat Kohli also started off with 3 crisp boundaries. However, he was dismissed by Mohammed Shami pretty cheaply on 13.
Royal Challengers Bangalore stuttered quite a bit in the middle overs as they kept losing wickets at crucial junctures of the game. The last 6 overs proved to be the decisive factor for RCB as AB de Villiers literally tormented the KXIP bowling attack with his exceptional strokeplay. He smashed Mohammed Shami for 3 consecutive sixes in the penultimate over to take RCB past the 170 mark.
The last over proved to be the most decisive of the innings as Marcus Stoinis took on Hardus Viljoen and collected 27 runs which included 2 fours and 3 sixes. Chasing a more than competitive total, Kings XI Punjab started off in the best possible manner with openers Chris Gayle and KL Rahul looking in great touch. Gayle was dismissed by Umesh Yadav after he raced off to 23 of just 10 deliveries.
Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul kept Punjab in the chase with some wonderful strokeplay. Both KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal looked in complete control of proceedings and shared a 59 runs stand to make Punjab believe. However, the wickets of Rahul and Mayank in quick succession put Punjab in the backfoot.
This is what winning skipper Virat Kohli said at the post-match presentation
We won 4 out of the last 5 we have played, it could have been 5 out of 5. We are just looking to enjoy our cricket. Tonight was another example of having fun. The partnership between ABD and Stoinis changed the match for us.
At one stage we thought 175 was good but AB and Marcus got us past 200. The way they played was the deciding factor. Our only focus was to play good as a team, we know that we are a good side, losing 6 in a row hurt all of us. That big break before Mohali helped us.
It is important that we don’t take any pressure. We just need to play how the world knows we can play. When two left-handers came in, we got a lot of dot balls and that was a crucial factor for us. Having 6-7 bowling options is a luxury for any team. I can pick and choose who is bowling well. Marcus brings in a lot of balance to our team. It was an outstanding effort by the bowlers today.
