Teenage sensation Prithvi Shaw was well in pursuit of a well deserved maiden IPL century against the Kolkata Knight Riders yesterday but stumbled in the final juncture when the job was almost done. He looked in superb touch and timed the balls to perfection en route to 99 of 55 deliveries which were studded with 12 fours and 3 sixes.
Prithvi Shaw went for an expansive pull shot which didn’t come on to the bat. He top edged straight up in the air and it was KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik who completed a straightforward catch in the end. Prithvi Shaw was very disappointed after missing a well deserved century and was also unable to finish the game for his franchise.
The match went to the Super over before Kagiso Rabada bowled a splendid over to snatch a memorable victory for one of the perennial underachievers of the tournament. Prithvi Shaw was never troubled any of the KKR bowlers as he paced his innings to perfection. He played the big shots at will and dominated the KKR bowling attack with utter disdain.
“I thought I missed the opportunity to finish the game for the team. Rather than scoring one run, I was looking to hit it big because I didn’t want the game to get this close. But the boys finished it off really well in the Super Over and I think we deserve this win,” Prithvi Shaw told reporters after the conclusion of Match 10.
Prithvi Shaw paced his innings quite brilliantly. He started off with a cautious approach but found the boundaries on a consistent basis which never really allowed the required rate to go up. Delhi Capitals was never behind the game and it was largely possible due to the special knocked played by Prithvi Shaw. The young opener calmed down a bit during the middle stages of his innings. Shaw revealed it was an idea which was shared to him by the support staff of the franchise.
Prithvi Shaw had a word with Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting
“I spoke to my support-staff, Ricky Ponting sir, Sourav Ganguly sir, Praveen Amre sir and I figured out that I was going a little too hard early. After getting two fours in an over I was looking to do silly things. So I changed my plan and looked to take my time and hit along the ground,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the young batsman felt that the pitch changed quite drastically towards the end of the match. Left-arm chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav who went for 33 runs in his first couple of overs came back strongly to defend 6 runs in the final over. The ball was turning square and Colin Ingram found it pretty difficult to get going.
“I think the pitch changed a bit, the bowlers’ marks opened up and Kuldeep and Piyush were getting good turn. Batting became difficult for us because their slower ones were working quite well, but we were looking to pick the singles and doubles,” he said.
After the match ended in a tie, the result was decided via a super over. Prasidh Krishna who bowled for KKR conceded only 10 runs and did a terrific job. However, Kagiso Rabada bowled a better over to give DC a thrilling victory. He castled Andre Russell with a brilliant yorkers and then prevented boundaries in the last few deliveries.
