Virat Kohli had another day to forget in the IPL on Thursday, with his team Royal Challengers Bangalore losing a close game against Mumbai Indians. The loss was Royal Challengers’ second consecutive loss of the season. The game went right down to the wire before the Mumbai Indians held on to register a thrilling 6-run win.
Asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians were off to a good start. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock added 54 runs for the first wicket before the latter departed. Rohit scored 48 before falling to Umesh Yadav to leave his team reeling at 87 for 2. Handy knocks from Yuvraj Singh and Suryakumar Yadav then saw the Mumbai Indians taking charge of the game.
The three-time winners were comfortably placed at 142 for 3 before losing four quick wickets to find themselves seven down for just 147. However, Hardik Pandya blazed his way to a 14-ball 34 to fire the visitors to a massive 187 for 8.

In reply, the Royal Challengers were off to a fast start with Moeen Ali and Parthiv Patel hitting 27 in the first three overs. The partnership ended when Moeen was run out. Patel was the next to fall after scoring 41. Skipper Kohli and AB de Villiers then shared 49 runs for the third wicket to set the tone for the chase. Jasprit Bumrah ended the stand by dismissing Kohli for 46.
De Villiers, on the other hand, went on to slam a fifty to keep the chase alive. He was losing his partners at regular intervals but managed to hold firm. The equation was finally down to 17 off the last over but the Royal Challengers could only score 10 off the Lasith Malinga over. The game, however, ended on a controversial note as the Malinga had overstepped on the last ball but the officials missed it.
But despite the loss, Virat Kohli added another feather to his his already cap. He became just the second player after Suresh Raina to score 5,000 runs in IPL. Kohli needed 46 runs to achieve the feat and he scored exactly 46.
Both Raina and Kohli had the chance to become the first player to 5,000 runs in the first game of the season. In fact, Kohli had the first chance to enter the record books as Royal Challengers Bangalore were batting first. However, he could score only 6 of the required 52 runs. Raina, on the other hand, needed 15 runs to get the milestone and he scored 19 to achieve it.
