Languishing at number six on the IPL 2020 points table, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will have to register victories in the upcoming fixtures to qualify for the playoffs. Coming off from a defeat, their next match is against Rajasthan Royals on Monday (October 19). This will be a must-win match for them in the ongoing edition of the lucrative league.
In their last match against Delhi Capitals, Dwayne Bravo was claimed to be injured and thus, he hadn’t bowled the last over. Although CSK had not cleared anything about how serious his injury is, it might be a big problem for them if the fast bowling allrounder doesn’t play against RR.
He is a vital cog for the team in the bowling department. As the team is already suffering in the absence of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh, CSK can be in big trouble if Bravo also misses some next matches.
Let’s take a look at how Chennai Super Kings’ playing can shape in against Rajasthan Royals:
MS Dhoni and CSK head coach Stephen Fleming had highly praised Sam Curran after his 31 runs off 21 balls knock against SRH. The youngster was sent with Faf du Plessis to give CSK a fiery start which he was successful in doing while he also picked up one wicket in his three overs. Although against DC he was out for a duck, the franchise is likely to send him again as the opener against RR.
2. Faf du Plessis:
Faf du Plessis is the leading scorer for Chennai Super Kings. The team heavily depends on his batting performance after Suresh Raina has backed out of the tournament. He needs to stay longer in the field to keep up the hope of the team’s victory.
3. Shane Watson:
Shane Watson is back in a form that has given Chennai Super Kings a big sigh of relief. After struggling in the first five matches, he got his form back against Kings XI Punjab in their first meeting, scoring unbeaten 83 runs. Against KKR, he also scored a half-century although it could not end up in a winning cause. He will have a big role to play against RR to guide them to victory.
4. Ambati Ryaudu:
Ambati Rayudu is also playing a crucial role for Chennai Super Kings. He starred in CSK’s first victory against Mumbai Indians. In seven matches, he has scored 192 runs but at the strike rate of 121.51. He will have to bat more aggressively against DC who have one of the strongest bowling line up.
5. MS Dhoni:
MS Dhoni has promoted himself up in the order after not finding any results while batting at no.7. He also has a huge responsibility on his shoulder to support the struggling middle-order. The skipper will have to play big knocks in this season to keep Chennai Super Kings in a good position.
6. Ravindra Jadeja:
Ravindra Jadeja has got things right with the bat but not with the ball. In the last few matches, he showed his power-hitting. But his spin bowling has not been effective. The franchise is hoping for him to repeat the IPL 2014 performance when he got the nerves of the opposition with his allrounder performance in the UAE.
7. Shardul Thakur:
Shardul Thakur is the underrated fast bowler in the Indian Premier League. He has got the knack of picking up wickets and giving breakthroughs to the team. Apart from bowling, he also adds depth to the batting. So far, in six matches, he has picked up nine wickets.
8. Dwayne Bravo:
Dwayne Bravo is the lynchpin for the team with both bat and ball. Although he has not got a chance to bat, he has delivered some good spells with the ball in the last four matches. The allrounder’s absence in the first three matches had also affected the team’s performance. As CSK has not officially released any statement about his injury, he is likely to play against RR.
9. Piyush Chawla:
The promotion of Sam Curran up in the order has allowed CSK to enter with one more bowling option. MS Dhoni is likely to enter with six bowling options in Abu Dhabi. So, Piyush Chawla is likely to get the place in the playing XI. Imran Tahir can also get the place who is still to play a match this season.
10. Karn Sharma:
Karn Sharma, off-spinner, has also produced desired results as he picked up four wickets in four matches at the economy rate of 8.66. He is likely to maintain his spot in the XI against SRH.
Chennai Super Kings will go with only one fast bowler in the playing XI, i.e., Deepak Chahar. Although they have Lungi Nigdi and Josh Hazelwood in their squad, the youngster has given a more promising performance. Chahar has snared eight wickets in the last nine matches.
