It was a great chance for Dinesh Karthik to play a match-winning knock for the team in the semifinal clash against New Zealand. But, unfortunately, he was dismissed for a cheap score when James Neesham pulled out one of the greatest catches in the game of cricket.
The knock certainly didn’t help the Indian team whatsoever, instead, put them in a real spot of bother, who already lost the wickets of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and the man in-form Rohit Sharma. Before being dismissed, Karthik took enough time to stay in the crease by defending and leaving the balls to perfection,
But, while trying to open the face of the bat, unfortunately, he found James at the point, who was agile enough to pull out a stunner. Is that mean the end of Dinesh Karthik in the ODI format of the game?
Dinesh Karthik scored only 9 fifties:
With World Cup being the main vision for the team, Dinesh Karthik has got the backup from the selectors and the team management. However, as there is a good time for the next year cup, the team would back a new youngster to take the place of Dinesh.
They might try young batsmen in the middle overs and give the Gloves to Rishabh Pant if MS Dhoni decides to hang his boots. Karthik is the senior-most player in the Indian team as he made his debut in One-Day Internationals in September 2004. M.S. Dhoni made his debut in December in the same year.
Karthik ‘s career from the beginning to end has been stop-start progress all the way through. He has played in 86 one-day matches spread over a period of 14 years and scored 1752 runs at an average of 30. Karthik has scored a total of 9 fifties with the highest score of 79.
Dinesh Karthik has always been a game-trier who couldn’t make the kind of impact that an M.S. Dhoni could. In fact all through his career, Karthik couldn’t do justice to his talent by making a telling contribution and playing the role of a match winner. Though he got a few opportunities, he failed to capitalise them to make selectors give a second thought on him.
However, India would bring in a few youngsters in order to prepare them for the next world cup. The likes of Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, maybe Prithvi Shaw and also a classy Sanju Samson are in the ranks for the Indian team to try.
Despite all, Dinesh Karthik will go down as one of the brightest stars, who never used his talent to perfection.
