Kapil Dev Shares Views On Rishabh Pant Losing His Place In Playing XI
Having lost his gloves to KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant is not an automatic first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman in the playing XI now and has already been benched for two consecutive matches. The 22-year-old was available for selection in the third ODI against Australia but the team management backed KL Rahul to do the job.
He was also available for selection in the first T20I against New Zealand but captain Virat Kohli had already confirmed that they will back Rahul in the shortest format as well. Rishabh now has a tough task to make his comeback into the playing XI as Rahul has been backed to the job for a long time now.
Amidst this, former India captain Kapil Dev also shared his views on the present situation and said: “The players have to look after themselves. They should never give the option to the selectors to drop them or give them a rest.” Kapil was speaking at a promotional event for the upcoming movie based on India’s 1983 World Cup victory.
Coming back to Rishabh, he was forced to miss the second ODI of the series against Australia due to concussion. For the first time, Rahul played as a wicketkeeper-batsman – he also kept wickets in 1st ODI – and impressed the captain. He kept the gloves for third ODI and looks set to do the glove work for a long time now.
Rishabh, in the first T20I, was pipped by senior Manish Pandey for a place in the playing XI and the team management isn’t expected to tinker with the winning combination. He might get to play a couple of matches but only if India win next two games to seal the series.
Pandey himself will not be a confirmed selection on Shikhar Dhawan’s return as Rahul might be demoted to number three, which will see a change in team combination once again.
The second T20I of the series takes place at Eden Park in Auckland later today. The visitors are expected to include Navdeep Saini in the playing XI. New Zealand might go in with the same combination.
