Kemar Roach, Nkrumah Bonner And Brandon King Recalled To West Indies ODI Squad For India Tour

Kemar Roach, Nkrumah Bonner and Brandon King have been brought into the West Indies ODI squad for the forthcoming three-match series against India, starting on February 6.

Fast bowler Kemar Roach, who has played 92 ODIs and bagged 124 wickets, last represented West Indies in the 50-over format against India in Port of Spain in August 2019.

Meanwhile, the top-order batsman, Nkrumah Bonner, last played an ODI for West Indies in Bangladesh in January 2021. He has played three ODIs for West Indies, and has also partaken in 67 List A matches, compiling 1956 runs. Incidentally, in the last one year, Nkrumah Bonner has turned out to be one of the mainstays of West Indies’ Test batting unit, averaging over 40.

On the other hand, Brandon King hasn’t played for the Caribbean side in ODIs since the series versus Ireland in 2019-20. The top-order batter was in fine form in the T20I series in Pakistan in 2021-22 and he has also notched up a fifty in the ongoing T20I rubber against England. He has also accumulated 743 runs in List A cricket.

“Kemar Roach is one of our leading fast bowlers and we believe we need bowlers upfront to get early wicket, and Kemar Roach, with an economy rate of five, is certainly good enough to play. Over the last few years, Nkrumah Bonner’s cricket has come on leaps and bounds and we believe he should be given an opportunity to play in the 50-over format,” Lead Selector, Desmond Haynes, said

“We want to have competition for places. We want to reach a stage where we have a lot of players fighting for positions. We want to broaden the pool of players we have to choose from. The team we have selected is a very good side and we are looking at this tour as part of the preparations for the World Cup in India in 2023,” he added.

The ODIs will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 6, 9 and 11 followed by the three T20Is at Eden Gardens. The West Indies are set to announce the squad for T20Is on Friday.

Desmond Haynes has marked his first squad since replacing Roger Harper as West Indies’ lead selector by handing Kemar Roach an ODI recall after two-and-a-half years out of the side for February’s series in India. Kemar Roach is one of six additions to the squad that lost 2-1 at home to Ireland this month, with Roston Chase and Justin Greaves among the players dropping out of the squad after lean series with the bat.

FULL SQUAD: Kieron Pollard (C), Fabian Allen, Nkrumah Bonner, Darren, Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran, Kemar Roach, Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith, Hayden Walsh Jr.

Kuldeep Yadav Returns In ODIs While Ravi Bishnoi And Deepak Hooda Earn Maiden Call-ups

India’s limited-overs squad selection for the upcoming home assignments against the West Indies marked the return of an old template, wrist-spin taking centre-stage again. After a long hiatus, Kuldeep Yadav is back to the 50-over fold to pair up with Yuzvendra Chahal, while Ravichandran Ashwin hasn’t been included either in the ODI squad or for the T20Is.

India will play three ODIs and as many T20Is against the West Indies, in Ahmedabad and Kolkata respectively, starting from February 6. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, has earned his maiden India call-up in T20Is which suggested that the selectors and the team management have seen wrist-spin as a wicket-taking option in the middle-overs.

Another spin-bowling all-rounder, Deepak Hooda, has made the ODI cut for the first time. Pacers Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel, top wicket-takers in IPL 2021 were also included in T20Is.
