Kusal Mendis Arrested After Killing A Civilian In Car-Accident

Sri Lanka’s player Kusal Mendis has been arrested by the police in the case of the car accident which led to the death of a civilian. Mendis’ vehicle injured the 64-year-old pedestrian, who was on a bicycle, in Horethuduwa. The civilian died on the spot before he could be admitted to the hospital.

As per ESPNcricinfo, the 25-year-old Mendis is under the custody of police who confirmed the news of the accident and death of one person. The cricketer will be produced before a magistrate in the next 48 hours. This fatal accident will cause big damage to the Sri Lankan cricket as Mendis was the vital cog for the team.

There are speculations in media that it might be a drink and drive case, although any such report has not been confirmed yet. Meanwhile, Mendis was to be taken to the Panadura Hospital to see if he had been drinking. Panadura police are conducting further investigations.

The right-hand batsman was, recently, the part of the training session at Pallekele, which ended on Wednesday. The case will surely affect or might demolish his career.

Kusal Mendis, who made international debut in 2015, has represented Sri Lanka in 44 Test matches, 76 ODIs and 26 T20Is. He has been the leading scorer, amassing 2995 runs in Test and 2167 runs in ODIs. He has also gathered 484 runs in the shortest format.

Mendis was last seen in cricket action during the home ODI and T20I series against the West Indies where he scored a century and a half-century in the ODI series.

It is a bad piece of news for the Sri Lanka national cricket team who was already surrounded by the questions of match-fixing. Former Sri Lankan Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage had earlier accused ‘certain parties’ in Sri Lanka for fixing the historic ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 final. However, in the end, after investigating three former captains – Aravinda de Silva, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, the fixing probe was called off, police stating that no evidence was found.
