India, on Monday, scripted history in Australia by winning their first-ever Test series Down Under. Virat Kohli and his men arrived in Sydney without the fear of losing the series. The thumping win in Melbourne had already given India an unassailable lead of 2-1 and helped them retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. And the visitors soon ended any chance of Australia’s comeback by scoring a mammoth 622 for 7 in the first innings.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant starred with the bat by scoring stupendous tons while Mayank Agarwal and Ravindra Jadeja scored fifties. Kuldeep Yadav then starred with the ball, picking up a five-wicket haul as India bowled out the hosts for just 300. Skipper Virat Kohli then asked the home side to follow-on on day four before bad light brought a premature end to the day. The weather on day five was even more worse as no play was possible at all.
It was the third consecutive day in Sydney that was affected by either bad light or rain. Play was eventually called off, sending the Indian players and fans into delirium. Kohli and teammates celebrated by thanking supporters who had stuck around despite the showers.
This was India’s first Test series win Down Under in 12 attempts. India had first toured Australia way back in 1948. In the series, India also registered their first Test win since 2008. Unsurprisingly, the team is receiving praise from all over and former Australia speedster Mitchell Johnson also acknowledged their achievement. The legendary pacer congratulated the visitors and also pointed out pacer Jasprit Bumrah for special praise, writing:
“Congratulations to India for winning the Test series in Australia for the first time ever ?? @Jaspritbumrah93 I was so impressed with your performance throughout this series! “
