Mohammad Shahzad Provisionally Banned By ICC After Testing Positive For Banned Substance

Afghanistan Cricket was struck with a heavy blow on Sunday, as a big-hitting opener, Mohammad Shahzad was handed a provisional suspension for testing positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol. The substance falls under the category of anabolic substances.

His reports came positive in an ‘out-of-competition’ test conducted on January 17 at the ICC Academy in Dubai, the International Cricket Council (ICC) declared on Thursday.

The 29-year-old wicket-keeper has been one of the first superstars from the rising associate nation. He has been a key player helping his team gain a competitive reputation among Test playing nations.

“The ICC today announced that Afghanistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad has been charged with an anti-doping rule violation under the ICC Anti-Doping Code,” said a statement from the governing body in Dubai.

“The sample analysed at the WADA-accredited laboratory in Salt Lake City was found to contain the presence of Clenbuterol, a prohibited substance.”

The ICC said that he will be banned from April 26 “unless he exercises his right to challenge the imposition of the provisional suspension before such date”.

“The matter will now be dealt with in accordance with the process set down in the code, and until such time as the process is resolved, the ICC will make no further comment on this matter,” added the statement.

Shahzad is now barred from playing competitive cricket till the results of his disciplinary hearing come out. He cannot challenge the ban and stands at the risk of getting a minimum of two years ban and a maximum of four years’ time away from cricket.

ICC in their press release on April 13 said,

“Within five days from the date of the notice of the charge, Shahzad has the right to request that his B sample is analysed. Within 12 days from the date of the notice of the charge, Shahzad can challenge the imposition of the provisional suspension at a provisional hearing, in which case the provisional suspension will not be imposed until the challenge is determined.”

“If Shahzad decides not to exercise his right to challenge the imposition of the provisional suspension within the 12-day deadline, his provisional suspension will immediately commence on 26 April 2017.”

“Shahzad has to respond to the charge within 14 days. If he fails to do so, he will be deemed to have waived his entitlement to a hearing and admitted to having committed the anti-doping rule violation,” the release further informed.

Shahzad made his international debut in 2010 and has played 58 matches for his country in the limited overs format. With 1,901 runs in one day format and 1,779 runs in T20 format, the burly top order batsman has been one of the strongest of pillars of Afghan Cricket in recent times.
