MS Dhoni has struggled with the bat, scoring a combined total of 314 runs from 30 matches in last two editions-IPL 2020 and IPL 2021. If his tally of 200 runs in IPL 2020 was disappointing, the following year was even worse as MS Dhoni aggregated only 114 runs.
In the last two seasons, MS Dhoni hasn’t scored a single half-century although in IPL 2021, he did play a cameo of 18 off 6 balls that won Chennai Super Kings the Qualifier 1 game against Delhi Capitals. With 13 runs needed off the last over, MS Dhoni cracked three fours off Avesh Khan and rolled back the years.
MS Dhoni Has To Bat Higher Up The Order: Reetinder Singh Sodhi
It was vintage MS Dhoni at his ‘finisher’ best but former India all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi feels the CSK skipper’s golden days with the bat are behind him. If the stats are anything to go by, it might be true. MS Dhoni usually bats lower down the order for CSK, but with his finishing skills on the wane, Reetinder Singh Sodhi feels CSK and MS Dhoni would both benefit if the skipper bats higher.
“MS Dhoni has to bat up the order because he is no longer the same finisher that he was known to be a few years back. If he takes his time, comes in the 10th or 11th over, he can hit the lusty blows later. MS Dhoni knows that he is the key to CSK’s prospects,” Sodhi said on an interaction, also featuring former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim.
It could be the last IPL for the 40-year-old legend MS Dhoni. Although he wishes to play his final match in Chennai, it would not be possible this season. Nevertheless, his captaincy skills have been flawless throughout for CSK and would again be vital this season. However, the concern remains regarding his batting, and it will be interesting to see if he fires in the department this term.
Ravindra Jadeja’s Form Will Be Very Important For CSK : Reetinder Singh Sodhi
For several years, MS Dhoni was the key man for CSK, but Reetinder Singh Sodhi feels that this time around, the focus will be more on star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Since his return from shoulder injury, Ravindra Jadeja has been in wonderful nick and is coming off a career-best knock of 175 for India against Sri Lanka. Although the IPL 2022 is a different kettle of fish, Ravindra Jadeja has proven in the past just why he is the complete package.
“Ravindra Jadeja’s form will be very important. The way he batted in the Mohali Test match, the way he is bowling, these are great signs for Chennai that if he picks form, he can take Chennai to the IPL final. Ravindra Jadeja, Dhoni – all these big players have to take a lot of responsibility,” pointed out Sodhi.
The franchise had retained four players in Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali and Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the 2022 edition and they bought back the likes of Deepak Chahar, Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, Dwayne Bravo and Mitchell Santner in the mega auction.
On March 26, the IPL 2021 winners defending champions Chennai Super Kings will play the Kolkata Knight Riders in their first game of the IPL 2022 season. Out of 14 seasons, the franchise CSK has played 12 as they were banned in 2016 and 2017. The team has won the trophy four times in IPL 2010, IPL 2011, IPL 2018, and IPL 2021. The franchise has also reached the playoffs 11 times out of 12 seasons.
