Mustafizur Rahman Nearing Full Fitness Ahead Of New Zealand Tour

Bangladesh fast-bowler Mustafizur Rahman is close to regaining full fitness before his team’s training camp in Australia. Mustafizur, who has suffered numerous injuries this year, has not played since July 22 after he aggravated an old shoulder injury during the NatWest T20 Blast. He further had a surgery on his shoulder and after months of rehabilitation, signs are that he might make it the squad that will visit New Zealand for three one-day internationals, three Twenty20 internationals and two Tests.

The tour starts on December 26 but the Bangladesh squad will fly to Australia on December 9 for a training camp. The squad will be finalised on December 18 before they leave for New Zealand.

Ebadat Hossain, who suffered a side strain in October, has also made a speedy recovery and is in line to make it to Australia. He along with Mustafizur had a long bowling session at the Academy ground on Sunday and Bangladesh Cricket Board’s chief physician Debashish Chowdhury is confident that the duo are almost fit.

“Mustafizur and Ebadat have bowled with an intensity of 80-90 percent of the abilities in the practice session this morning. Our trainer is very happy with their progress. The good news is they were able to bowl two spells…without any discomfort.” Dr Chowdhury said.

“The thing is bowling at such intensity means they are almost fit. If they are giving 80 percent here, we can assume they have achieved [full fitness].”We only have a few days left. Another gym session and bowling session will be held in the meantime. The selectors or the team management will then consider sending them to Australia or New Zealand.”

The physician believed the pair has regained the fitness that will help them to train with others in Australia.

“We are assuming they will be able to follow the training drills and schedule that the other bowlers will follow there.”

Meanwhile, another fast bowler Mohammad Shahid, who suffered a knee injury in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League, is in doubt for the tour as Chowdhury said he still needs rest.

“He suffered the injury last week. We ran tests on his [anterior crutiate] ligament injury today. His knee is better than before…but he still needs to rest for a week more.

“We will assess the injury again in a couple of days later and then we will be able to tell you about the next step,” Chowdhury said.
