Neesham make a comeback for India Test series, Jeet Raval and Henry dropped

New Zealand Cricket Board, on Tuesday, announced the 15 man squad for the upcoming Test series against India. The selectors have dropped the Indian origin batsman Jeet Raval and the fast bowler Matt Henry from the previous squad, Jimmy Neesham is the only new addition to the team.

Neesham last played a Test match in November 2015 at Brisbane, since then he has out of action from international cricket due to a back injury. He returned to the domestic circuit and now is making a comeback riding on the back of his good performances there.

“Jimmy has put in a lot of work to make sure he is physically ready for a return to Test cricket, having two pace-bowling all-rounders in Jimmy and Doug Bracewell helps the balance of the squad, particularly if playing on pitches which demand a spin-heavy bowling attack.” New Zealand selector Gavin Larsen said on the comeback of Jimmy Neesham.

Larsen, however, did not have any perfect answer on Jeet Raval’s exclusion but added that he is a future prospect and the selectors will continue to monitor his performance “Jeet Raval misses out on this tour, but we were really pleased with what we saw of him in Africa. He did everything asked of him and we’ll continue to monitor him closely.” Said Larsen.

“Mitch Santner and Ish Sodhi will have benefitted from getting a taste of Indian conditions earlier this year at the ICC World Twenty20 and both showed excellent form at that tournament. It’s another big challenge for them early in their young careers, as well as for Mark Craig, who has made some changes in the past six months and has shown growth in his game.

“India’s the No.2 ranked side in the world, and their record at home is formidable. We’re yet to win a Test series over there and that’s motivating for everyone. We’ve got three Tests try to create a special piece of history.” concluded a hopeful selector.

The New Zealand team is expected to land in India next week. The international fixtures will start from September 22 before they play a 3-day practise game in the national capital at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. The first Test will be played at Green Park which will be hosting a Test match after an exile of six years. Both the teams will fly to Kolkata for the second Test.

The third and the final test match will be played in Holkar stadium, Madhya Pradesh which will be hosting a Test match for the first time. Five ODI matches series will follow the Test series. The Kiwis will announce the squad for ODI series later.

New Zealand last toured India in the year 2012 to play two Test matches and the same number of T20Is. Indian team won both the Test matches whereas the New Zealand team continued its winning streak against India in T20s.

Test squad for India tour – Kane Williamson (capt), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Mark Craig, Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling.
