Never Underestimate The Importance Of MS Dhoni: Michael Clarke
The five-match series has made one thing pretty much clear that India still do not have the right replacement for the incumbent MS Dhoni. Rishabh Pant might have shown promise with his exploits in Tests but his performances in the last two ODIs left a lot to be desired. India were up 2-0 in the series and then lost the third ODI before resting Dhoni for the final two games to try out Pant. However, the move backfired as India lost both the games while Pant failed in both as the hosts suffered a crushing 3-2 loss.
Batting first, Australia posted 272 for 9 in the allotted 50 overs. Usman Khawaja once again starred with the bat by scoring his second ton of the series. At 175 for 1 in the 33rd over, Australia looked set to post 300 again. However, they lost wickets in heaps towards the end and thus finished on 272. But the score turned out to be more than enough in the end as India rarely looked in contention to chase it down.
Barring Rohit Sharma’s fifty, the other top-order batsmen including skipper Virat Kohli failed miserably as India found themselves reeling at 132 for 6. The game looked all but over at that stage. But Kedar Jadhav (44) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (46) had other plans as they looked to take India home. However, before the victory could come in sight, Pat Cummins broke their 91-run stand. On the very next delivery, Jhye Richardson dismissed Jadhav to reduce India to 223 for 8. India were eventually all out for 237.
The defeat has once again highlighted the importance of Dhoni. The former India skipper is not only a solid middle-order batsman but also brings a lot of experience to the table which ultimately makes things easy for skipper Virat Kohli.
And now former Australia skipper Michael Clarke has reiterated it. While replying to one of his followers’ tweet who felt that India are yet to replace Yuvraj Singh, he stated the importance of Dhoni in the team, writing:
“Never underestimate the importance of MSD – experience in the middle order is so important.”
