New Zealand vs Windies 2017/18: Injured Martin Guptill Not To Play ODIs; Williamson, Southee To Be Rested After First ODI

Martin Guptill is ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series between New Zeland and Windies because he is suffering from a hamstring injury. In his absence, selectors have called in George Worker, who will also open the innings in place of Guptill.

Worker was recently called to the Test side for the first Test as well but was released after Tim Southee made a comeback for the second game.

The New Zealand selectors have also decided to manage the workload of the players as captain Kane Williamson will only lead the side in the first ODI, before being released for the last two games. Along with him, senior player Tim Southee will also play just the first ODI before being rested for the last two games.

Williamson will be replaced by Neil Broom while all-rounder, Mitchell Santner will come in for the second and third ODI in place of Southee. He has been rested for the first ODI of the series to recover from the shoulder injury.

Tom Latham, who had excellent ODI series against India, will lead the side after Willaimson will go on a rest.

“It’s a long summer, so for those guys playing in all three formats it’s important we keep them fresh and build depth leading into a world cup year. Tim and Kane will both take breaks during this series, but there will be others who will also rest throughout the season,” selector Gavin Larsen said.

The three-match ODI series will start on December 20 with the first ODI to be played in Whangarei. The rest of the two games will be played on December 23 and 26 in Christchurch.

New Zealand have already swept the Test series by defeating the visitors by a margin of 2-0. They won the first Test by a margin of an innings and 67 runs while continued the winning streak in the second game by defeating Windies by 240 runs. Windies were without there captain, Jason Holder, in the second game who was banned due to slow over rate.
