Australia’s Peter Handscomb, who has been performing the wicket-keeping duties in the absence of Matthew Wade in the ongoing Chappell-Hadlee trophy, has said he has no intention to become a full-time wicketkeeper for the team and is happy doing his batsman duties.

“It’s an absolute honour to put the gloves on for Australia but first and foremost I’ve always been a batsman. I was throughout junior cricket when I was keeping as well. Batting was always my number one, but going away for series and being the back-up keeper, I’m very happy to do.

“It’s definitely a little bit of extra pressure, but if that’s what the team needs, I’m happy,” he said.

While Handscomb has been tipped by some cricketers to focus on his batting, Trevor Hohns, the interim chairman of selectors, has said he is comfortable with Handscomb keeping wickets if Wade isn’t fit for the Test series against India later this month.

Handscomb will tour India for the first time. If given the wicket-keeping duties, it might add pressure on him as Australian batsmen are believed to struggle on the tour and everyone will have an eye on Handscomb due to his superb form in Test cricket.
