Parthiv Patel Credits MS Dhoni For Handling CSK In A Remarkable Manner

Parthiv Patel, former Indian and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player, credited skipper MS Dhoni for handling the team in a remarkable manner.

MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK), made a strong comeback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Though they began their campaign with a loss against Delhi Capitals, the three-time champions were quick enough to make it to the top half of the IPL 2021 points table and consolidated their position with back-to-back wins.

Parthiv Patel: It Was Remarkable To See The Way MS Dhoni Handled CSK

CSK had one of the most consistent batting line-ups in the tournament. With six of their batsmen scoring half-centuries, they didn’t rely on anyone in particular. Before the tournament was suspended last week, CSK was placed second with 10 points and a net run rate of +1.263 – the highest among all teams.

Former Indian and CSK player Parthiv Patel credited skipper MS Dhoni for handling the team in a remarkable manner. While speaking to the Star Sports network, the cricketer-turned-commentator said that a ‘strong captain’ is always needed if a team wants to make a ‘comeback’.

“I had no doubts about it. CSK was in my top four even before the tournament started. But I thought the way MS Dhoni handled the team, it was remarkable. When you have to make a comeback, you need a strong captain,” said Parthiv Patel.

IPL 2020 was a season the Chennai Super Kings brigade would want to forget in a hurry. For the first time in the history of the tournament and in all the editions till then that CSK had played (11), the MS Dhoni-led side failed to make the cut for the play-offs. In fact, the men in yellow were the first ones to be eliminated from the play-off berth.

IPL 2021 however saw a reversal of fortunes as they are 2nd in the points table currently with 10 points from only 7 games winning 5 and losing 2 against Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. They played a brand of attacking and aggressive cricket which was missing from their campaign last year.

Parthiv Patel: MS Dhoni Decided Batting Line-up By Keeping Players Form In Mind

Parthiv Patel further highlighted the way MS Dhoni decided his batting line-up, by keeping the form of his players in mind. As both Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu hadn’t played any competitive cricket before the IPL 2021, MS Dhoni went with Moeen Ali at No.3. The move paid off well as the English all-rounder amassed 206 runs at an average of 34.33 and a strike rate of 157.25.

“Everyone thought Suresh Raina will bat at No.3 but it was Moeen Ali. He knew what changes he needed to do. Everyone was thinking that MS Dhoni will come and bat at No.4 or No.5. He took a backseat, he knew that there are guys who are batting well and they should get more number of overs,” Parthiv Patel said.

Faf du Plessis continued from where he left in the UAE in 2020 scoring 320 runs in 7 matches at a strike rate of 145.45 including 4 fifties. The platform laid by him and opener Ruturaj Gaikwad (196 runs at a strike rate of 128.94) eased the pressure on the middle order and went a long way enabling CSK to put up massive totals.

Moeen Ali was a revelation with the bat at number three as he scored a useful 206 runs at a strike rate of 157.25. Ambati Rayudu-136 runs, Ravindra Jadeja-131 runs, Suresh Raina-123 runs also were among runs. Among the CSK bowlers, Sam Curran(9), Deepak Chahar (8), Ravindra Jadeja (6), Moeen Ali (5), and Lungi Ngidi(5) were among the wickets. Deepak Chahar twice took 4 wicket hauls.
