Prithvi Shaw, suspension, doping violation

The Indian youngster Prithvi Shaw has faced suspension for a doping violation. Apart from him, two other junior domestic cricketers have also faced suspensions for the doping violations.

On Tuesday (30th July), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced these suspensions through the media release.

On 22nd February 2019, during the 2018/19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the 19-year-old Mumbai cricketer Prithvi Shaw had provided a urine sample as part of the BCCI’s anti-doping testing program.

After the testing, that sample was found to contain Terbutaline. Terbutaline is prohibited both In & Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances.

On 16th July 2019, Shaw faced charges on this doping violation under the BCCI Anti-Doping Rules (ADR) Article 2.1. In that time, the youngster faced provisional suspension pending the determination of the charge.

The 19-year-old Shaw has admitted this charge but added that it was inadvertent as he took over the counter cough syrup to protect himself from the cough.

Prithvi Shaw will be available for the Indian domestic cricket from 16th November 2019

After getting a satisfactory explanation, the BCCI has suspended Shaw till the 15th November 2019.

Prithvi Shaw was the captain of the India U19 side in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2018. That Indian junior side won that tournament after remaining unbeaten in that tournament.

In last October, the youngster made his international debut by appearing in the Rajkot Test against Windies. Shaw has played two Tests where he has scored 237 runs with an average of 118.50. The right-handed opening batsman has hit one century and one half-century in Test career.
