Cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has applauded Ajinkya Rahane’s century which came with an additional responsibility to lead the pack. Rahane smashed gritty hundred against Australians on day two of the ongoing second Test match at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Without their batting mainstay and regular captain Virat Kohli, India got the better of Australians on Sunday (December 28). Ajinkya Rahane led them from the front. He stitched a crucial 50-runs partnership with Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant before frustrating Australian bowlers with a 104* runs partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. In the process, Rahane showed his class and determination to get his 12th Test hundred while his second at MCG.

Sanjay Manjrekar was full of praise of Ajinkya Rahane. He didn’t mince words to claim that this hundred could be the right-hand batsman’s best hundred considering he had also the burden of leading the team.
“I think this is very close to being his best Test hundred. He got his first Test hundred in Wellington but the hundred that comes close to this one is the hundred that he got at Lord’s,” Sanjay Manjrekar told Sony Six.
“Here, India were under pressure 0-1 down, the pitch had something in it and he was the captain, additional responsibility, the quality of the bowling attack, looking at all those parameters, this could Ajinkya Rahane’s best Test hundred,” Sanjay Manjrekar added.
Sanjay Manjrekar stated that he liked the way Rahane has proved his case and played a crucial knock while calmly celebrated it.
“Terrific innings, it was an innings of quiet resolve. I love people who step up with so much to prove. He has got some critics now but when he gets a hundred, that’s what he does, no histrionics, quietly raises the bat,” Sanjay Majrekar further said.
Currently, India is leading by 82 runs and day three is going to be thrilling. Australia will have to quickly pick five remaining wickets of India to control the lead.
