Ravichandran Ashwin’s Grandfather Passes Away

At a time when Ravichandran Ashwin is gearing up to lead India’s spin attack in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, the ace spinner has received the heart-breaking news of the passing away of his grandfather S Narayanasamy.

According to a report in DNA, the cause of the death was ascertained to be the old age and health related issues. The unfortunate news was confirmed by Ashwin’s family members.

Mr Narayanasamy, a former employee at the Southern Railways in the Indian Railways, passed away at the age of 92 in Chennai on Saturday, May 27 and his last rites were performed on Sunday (May 28). Ashwin’s father revealed that Mr Narayanasamy had a big role to play in his grandchild’s early years as a player.

Ashwin, meanwhile, is back in the Indian team for the Champions Trophy after missing the entire Indian Premier League due to a sports hernia. But before that, the 30-year old ace from Tamil Nadu had enjoyed a sensational season in Test cricket. He recently won the prestigious International Cricketer of the Year award at the CEAT Cricket Rating (CCR) International Awards 2017.

The award capped off a fine season for Ashwin where he played an integral role in India’s domination at home. Ashwin took a staggering 82 wickets in the home- season, as India won 10 out of the 13 matches to consolidate their position at the top of ICC Test rankings. In the process, he also broke South Africa pacer Dale Steyn’s record of most number of wickets in a season.

In 2016, he had also won the coveted ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year 2016 awards and had become only the second Indian after Rahul Dravid to win both the awards same year.

Earlier this year, he was presented with the Dilip Sardesai award at the BCCI’s Annual Awards for his performance in India’s 2-0 Test series win in West Indies last year. Ashwin had bagged the Man of the Series award in the Caribbeans after picking up 17 wickets in addition to scoring two hundreds.
