Rishabh Pant Pips Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhoni To Win DSCA’s Sportsman of the Year 2018
Rishabh Pant had a stunning 2018. It was the year which truly marked his arrival at the international stage. The southpaw has not looked back since this year’s Indian Premier League. Pant ended this year’s IPL as the second highest run-getter with 684 runs from 14 games. It included five fifties and one century. He soon found a place in India A squad for the England tour where he impressed as well. It paved his way for Test call-up, and he made a big impression again.
Pant got off the mark in Tests with a six before scoring a stunning century in the final Test. It was followed by two impressive fifties against Windies at home. Pant further enhanced his reputation with a stunning show in the Test series against Australia.
He finished the series as the second highest run-scorer with 350 runs. The series included his monumental knock of 159 at the Sydney Cricket Ground as he became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score a Test ton in Australia. He also broke MS Dhoni’s record of highest Test score in overseas by an Indian wicketkeeper.
During the tour of England, he had also become the first Indian wicketkeeper to score a Test century in England. He also became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score a 150+ score in Test cricket away from home. The previous highest individual Test score by an Indian keeper outside India was MS Dhoni’s 148 in the 2006 Faisalabad Test against Pakistan. Pant also became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score two Test tons outside India.
The impressive performances have helped him win the prestigious Sportsman of the Year 2018 by the Delhi Sports Journalists Association (DSCA). The youngster left behind the likes of Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan to win the award.
Delhi Capitals took to Twitter to announce the news, writing:
“@RishabPant777 has been awarded Sportsman of the Year 2018 by the Delhi Sports Journalists Association 🏆 Congratulations to our swashbuckling southpaw 🙌”
