Former Australia skipper Steve Waugh has broken his silence with the latest statement on his official Facebook page.
It is over the recent Australian underhand tactics in Cape Town against South Africa.
Being the part Australian cricketing culture, Waugh expressed the huge concern over the latest unfortunate turn of events. While adding, the fans have also been affected in one way or another.
“Like many, I’m deeply troubled by the events in Cape Town this last week, and acknowledge the thousands of messages I have received, mostly from heartbroken cricket followers worldwide,” Waugh wrote on Facebook.
The veteran cricketer Waugh is saddened by the unfortunate incident which happened on day three of the Newlands Test on March 24.
Waugh reiterated they have been believing in free and fair play while donning the Baggy Green. He revealed they have been of this belief that their team could win the game.
“The Australian Cricket team has always believed it could win in any situation against any opposition, by playing combative, skilful and fair cricket, driven by our pride in the fabled Baggy Green,” Waugh said.
The brazen incident saw the 52-year old Waugh pushing for the focused perspective owing to the latest fiasco.
“A focused and balanced perspective is needed in the condemnation on those involved in this, with a clear and critical consideration to the social impact and mental health of all players,” Waugh further said.
Moreover, Australia head coach Darren Lehmann is hinted to be stepping down from his post.
In addition, Smith alongside is facing the wrath of being expected to be banned at least for a year owing to the latest speculations.
Waugh subsequently stated he is a greater believer in the mantra Australian carried forward throughout the year. But he somewhat hinted some of the players have crossed past the line owing to the latest shenanigans.
“I have no doubt the current Australian team continues to believe in this mantra, however, some have now failed our culture, making a serious error of judgement in the Cape Town Test Match,” Waugh maintained.
Cricket Australia is thoroughly investigating the shocking incident following the visibly shaken statement by its chief executive James Sutherland in Melbourne.
“I will support all positive action to ensure an outcome for the betterment of the game, regaining the trust and faith of every fan of cricket,” Waugh believes.
The admission of Smith and Cameron Bancroft has further irked the fans. Both have been charged by the world cricket governing body International Cricket Council.
The New South Wales-based Smith is facing the suspension of a one-match ban. He is eventually docked with hundred percent match fee.
However, ICC charged the 25-year old Bancroft with the match fee of 75 percent.
The star cricketer Steve Waugh featured in 325 One-day Internationals and 168 Tests for Australia.
