Shikhar Dhawan Adds Experience To Motivated Core Of Delhi Capitals, Says Co-owner Parth Jindal

Ahead of the upcoming auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Delhi Capitals have taken some big calls. The first one was their decision to buy their former opener Shikhar Dhawan from Sunrisers Hyderabad.

On Tuesday, the Delhi franchise changed their name from Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals after a takeover from JSW Group. The Delhi outfit announced the big decisions in a glittering ceremony which was also attended by Parth Jindal, the Managing Director of JSW Cement.

The national capital-based outfit confirmed that Shreyas Iyer would continue to lead the team. Iyer had taken over as captain midway through the last season when Gautam Gambhir stepped down owing to poor form and a string of losses.

“Shreyas Iyer will lead the side this season,” said Jindal.

Later, the franchise shared a message from their newly signed icon Shikhar Dhawan before stating that the star is all charged up to play for the team.

Jindal said that Dhawan is a valuable addition to the team full of youngsters.

“Shikhar Dhawan is a proven performer in IPL and he adds the perfect experience to the motivated young core of ours,” said Jindal.

Dhawan, meanwhile, has not only returned to his hometown but also the IPL franchise where he began his IPL career in 2008. He stayed with the Delhi Capitals for just one season, scoring 340 runs in 14 games. The southpaw then moved to Mumbai Indians for a couple of seasons but failed to impress. In two editions, he could play only 15 games while scoring just 241 runs.

His next destination was the now-defunct Deccan Chargers. He played for the franchise in 2011 and 2012 before joining Sunrisers in 2013. It is with Sunrisers where he established himself as a big name in the league. Dhawan consistently delivered for Sunrisers, striking a formidable partnership with David Warner.  Dhawan left the franchise as their top-scorer. In 91 games for the Hyderabad-based outfit, he scored 2,768 runs and helped them lift the title in 2016.

Delhi Capitals will be hoping that Dhawan’s arrival help them end their last season’s top-order woes.
