Shikhar Dhawan, the opening Indian batsman will lead India in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa on home soil, Board of Control for Cricket in India sources confirmed.

The captaincy will be handed over to Shikhar Dhawan as 2022 T20I World Cup-bound players are likely to be rested, the sources added.

Shikhar Dhawan To Lead In The Upcoming ODI Series Against Proteas As 2022 T20I World Cup Bound Cricketers Likely To Be Rested: BCCI Sources

The eighth edition of the 2022 ICC T20I World Cup is set to take place from October 16 to November 13 this year in Australia. Moreover, VVS Laxman is likely to be with the team as a coach in absence of head coach Rahul Dravid, they added.

India will play three T20Is and ODIs each against South Africa starting September 28. The first T20I will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on September 28. The second T20I will be played on October 2, 2022, Gandhi Jayanti, to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at Guwahati, followed by the last T20I at Indore on October 4.

The action will then shift to Lucknow on 6th October where the ODI series will get underway, where Shikhar Dhawan will lead the squad. Ranchi and Delhi will host the second and third ODI, respectively, on October 9 and 11.

India last played an ODI series under the captaincy of KL Rahul against Zimbabwe and beat them 3-0. Ahead of West Indies, India also played an ODI series against West Indies under the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan winning the series 3-0.

India’s three-match ODI series will be played from October 6 and will end on October 11. However, in just six days of the last ODI, Team India will play a warm-up match against Australia before the 2022 T20I WC.

Hence, the India 2022 T20I World Cup-bound Indian squad will leave for Australia by October 10 to acclimate to the conditions and time zones. That is why the board BCCI has decided to have a completely separate squad for the ODI series.

The likes of Rahul Tripathi are expected to make their debut in the series. There is also talk about Umran Malik bowling longer spells and could be picked for the ODI series.
