After Anurag Thakur, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has said that the country should not play cricket with Pakistan in the wake of Uri Terrorist attacks. In one of the most deadliest attacks on Indian soldiers in recent years, the militants attacked an Army brigade headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri on September 18 and killed 17 soldiers.
Talking to India Today, Ganguly said: “Terrorism is an issue and you can’t play cricket (with Pakistan) when people are getting killed at the borders.”
There have been calls from several quarters to cut the cricketing ties with the arch rivals after the attack and BCCI president Anurag Thakur was one of them. Mr. Thakur said that even the thought of resuming cricketing ties with the arch rivals is not appropriate.
“In the context of what has happened even considering such a thought is not appropriate. Priority is to expose Pak as a country which sponsors terrorism. No question of playing cricket which such a nation,” he said.
The two fierce rivals have not played a full bilateral Test series after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks which led to the suspension of cricketing ties between the two countries. They played a short series of three ODIs and two T20 matches in India in December 2012 but otherwise they have met only in ICC-organised events or the Asia Cup.
There were speculations of a short bilateral series late last year but nothing concrete materialised after both the countries failed to come to a conclusion on the venue.
