Sports Minister Vijay Goel Blasts BCCI Officials For Meeting PCB Officials To Discuss Bilateral Ties

Sports minister Vijay Goel has said there were no need for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials to meet their Pakistani counterparts to discuss the bilateral cricketing ties considering the fact that resuming cricket between the two arch-rivals depends completely on the government.

“I would want to know why they went ahead with the meeting (when they knew that the series was subject to government clearance). What I can say is that we cannot play bilateral series with Pakistan until it stops cross-border terrorism,” Goel told PTI when asked about the meeting between BCCI and PCB in Dubai on Monday (May 29).

The meeting, meanwhile, ended without any conclusive outcome after the Indian government refused to give the green light for any bilateral series with Pakistan.

The BCCI, represented by joint secretary Amitabh Chaudhary, CEO Rahul Johri and GM (Cricket Operations) MV Sridhar met with their Pakistani counterparts to discuss the relation between the two cricket bodies and the $60 million compensation demanded by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Earlier this month, the PCB had sent a legal notice to the BCCI in an attempt to seek monetary compensation for the latter’s alleged failure to honour the agreement. However, the BCCI, in the defence, had stated that the agreement between the two bodies was not formal. Shaharyar Khan, the PCB chairman, retaliated by saying that it was a proper contract signed between the two boards in their bid to revive bilateral ties.

Both the boards, in 2014, had signed MoUs for six bilateral series to be played between 2015 and 2023 with Pakistan hosting four of them. But with both the countries failing to honour the agreement, the boards decided to hold the meeting but even that has not resulted in anything positive regarding the bilateral ties and any chance of a resumption of series between the two arch-rivals is looking like a distant dream.

With political situation not sound between the two countries, both the teams have not played a full bilateral Test series since 2007 when Pakistan visited India for three Tests and five One-Day Internationals. They played a short series of three ODIs and two T20s in India in December 2012 but otherwise, both have faced each other only in the ICC organised events or the Asia Cup.
