It seems like nothing is going right for the Indian Skipper at the moment. Firstly, he continued his poor form in knock-out games and then the world cup loss followed by the rifts in his own team. Now, Virat Kohli is once again dragged into the headlines when Steve Smith scored a stunning century against England team at Edgbaston, in fact, a match-saving knock.
Playing his first Test cricket in 16 months, Steve Smith resumed normalcy as he smashed his 24th Test century en route to his astounding score of 144 against England on the opening day of Ashes 2019.

Steve Smith scored 144:
On a fairly greenish Birmingham track on Thursday morning, Australia failed to counter the fullish and seaming deliveries from the English pace attack as they slipped to 122 for eight before Smith valiantly pulled things back on track with his stunning innings.

Smith played a knock of 144 runs against England to rescue Australia from 122/8 and take the team’s total to 284 runs in the first innings of the match. He received high praises from the former cricketers, analysts and the fans across the globe.
It was Steve Smith’s 24th Test century. Smith, in the process, went past India skipper Virat Kohli to become the second-fastest batsman to register 24 centuries in Test cricket. It took Smith just 118 to complete 24 Test centuries. Kohli, on the other hand, had taken 123 innings to achieve the same.
Alongside Virat Kohli, the Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar took 123 and 125 innings to score their 24th Test century, respectively. Also, Smith stands alongside Greg Chappell, Viv Richards and Mohammad Yousuf on 24 tons. Only six Aussie cricketers have more Test centuries than Smith.
