Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has suggested to go with KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal for India’s opening pair in the coming T20I series against Australia, scheduled to begin on December 4. He has also advised to stick with Kuldeep Yadav, who had replaced Yuzvendra Chahal in the last ODI, for the T20I series.
India entered with a lot of changes in the last ODI although they had already lost the series. Chahal, who gave away 86 and 71 runs in the first two ODIs respectively, was dropped for the dead-rubber and Kuldeep Yadav was swooped in. The Chinaman picked a wicket while also was economical, conceding 57 runs in 10 overs.
Talking to India Today, Sunil Gavaskar recommended selecting Kuldeep Yadav over Yuzvendra Chahal, who was the snazziest in the IPL, in the first T20I. As per him, the wrist-spinner was in a good rhythm, and if he produces better spells, he should be given further chances. He also believes Hardik Pandya should bowl at least one or two over to ease the load from bowlers.
“Kuldeep showed good rhythm. He bowled after long time. I think at least for the first T20 International, he can be tried out and see how it goes,” Gavaskar told India Today. “(If) Hardik will bowl a couple of overs in the T20 format and that will ease the load on other bowlers and also create more options for Kohli,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
KL Rahul should open the innings: Sunil Gavaskar
For the opening combination, Sunil Gavaskar recommends that KL Rahul should open with Shikhar Dhawan. He has come to this conclusion after considering their IPL performance. The right-hand batsman ended the T20 league as the highest scorer while Dhawan was the highest scorer for Delhi Capitals.
“For me, KL Rahul, who scored nearly 700 runs in IPL and Shikhar Dhawan, who has of late looked most comfortable in T20 format should open the innings followed by Virat Kohli. “If they stay till 14th or 15th over, then Hardik Pandya comes in at number four or if two wickets go in Powerplay, then Shreyas Iyer,” Sunil Gavaskar stated.
