Ashes 2017/18: Glenn Maxwell Hasn’t Performed Well Enough – Trevor Hohns
The chairman of the National Selection panel of Australia, Trevor Hohns feels both Glenn Maxwell and Hilton Cartwright, who both featured in Australia’s last Test match against Bangladesh early this year has misused their opportunity in the opening fixtures of Sheffield Shield.
“Both of those fellas obviously were spoken about and, once again, we came up with the fact they haven’t performed well enough in the early rounds of the competition this year. As I suggested, they were going to be crucial rounds for everybody, and everybody knew there were positions up for grabs. It was up to them to perform and present their case to us,” Hohns stated.
Hohns justified the selection of Shaun Marsh ahead of Maxwell and Cartwright saying he has performed tremendously well and demanded to be picked up.
“We just feel Shaun Marsh, in particular, if we are going down that path again, has performed much, much better and demanded to be chosen,” Hohns further added.
Marsh, who has been in and out of the Test squad due to injuries and inconsistency, has been one of the finest stroke makers in recent times. He averages more than 40 while batting at no four, whereas, his average jumps up to 54 while batting at no. 5. He has only batted once at no. 6 earlier against India in Dharamsala. Marsh has been opening in the ongoing Shield games, which Hohns feels will be an advantage at the no. 6 spot where he will have to face the second new ball.
Maxwell will have to focus more on scoring big in the two Sheffield Shield game before Christmas against New South Wales and Western Australia. Recently, the 29-year-old Maxwell claimed he wants to get remembered for playing long and consistent innings rather than an ‘X-factor’ or ‘big show’.
Maxwell scored two half-centuries against South Australia last week. However, he didn’t seem comfortable while batting at no. 3 in Victoria’s encounter against Tasmania. Recently, Brad Hodge questioned whether Maxwell should bat at a position originally reserved for the best technical practitioner of the side.
Maxwell has an average of 40 in the six innings he has featured for Victoria and has to take an additional role, as Peter Handscomb is on national duty. Maxwell has a lot to play for as a lot of international tours are waiting this summer for the baggy greens.
