The impact of recalling the seniors to the Indian team

The recent news hogging the limelight about the chances awarded to the seniors has raised quite a few eyebrows. Though each player is worth ten times the chance they deserve, is the board missing the bigger picture by indicating that the youngsters are not assured of their places in the team if the seniors manage to wedge back into the team. Where would that leave the youngsters?

Yes, I do agree that India is in dire need of experience before they pick the squad for the upcoming world cup and it’s a known fact that all the four players considered are pure match winners on any given day. But it could be called bad luck or a mere twist of fate as the seniors, one by one started running out of form. The selectors persisted with them for a while before deciding ‘enough is enough’ and handling the responsibility to a young and dynamic team.

They didn’t disappoint. Putting aside the age old adage on the lack of experience, the youngsters fought hard in a disciplined fashion to help MS Dhoni in uplifting the team. They have jelled together as a team and have managed to keep India at the top of the table. India is finally looking forward to its foreign tour without the fear of losing badly. It is mainly due to the presence of talented youngsters in the side.

I do not deny that the seniors have brought many a laurel for their country in the past, but deciding to go back to them based on their previous performances seems ridiculous. Moreover, giving the seniors a false hope is not going to do them any good.

But I have to admit that there is still one or two slots left for the seniors, especially for Yuvraj Singh . The aggressive middle-order all-rounder could be the perfect choice for the number four position currently held by the Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik.

Yuvraj Singh

The inclusion of Yuvraj Singh would add lots of depth to the otherwise experience lacking middle-order. He could guide the youngsters and his left-arm spin would definitely be an added bonus.

The next possible slot that could open-up would either be in the opening department or the fast bowling department. Though India has good youngsters on both, I do not believe that Rohit Sharma could be a regular fixture in the opening slot.

There are two obvious choices here and only one among VirenderSehwag and GautamGambhir could be selected based on their performances. Keeping in mind, the 2015 world cup, I believe that Gambhit would be a better option than Sehwag considering his stong technique and solid game ethics. He could be the perfect foil to Dhawan, playing in tandem in a calm and calculative fashion while Dhawan takes the attack back to the opposition.

The next choice would be in the fast bowling department. The experience of Zaheer Khan, especially in fast bowling friendly conditions would be priceless and leaving him out would be a fool’s choice. He should definitely be kept in the loop and should be selected if his fitness permits. He along with the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohit Sharma, Shami Ahmed, Ishant Sharma, UmeshYadav and IrfanPathan could form a potent attack and help India in defending the world cup.

India has gone through a tough time, and considering the reprieve they have got in the form of youngsters, I firmly believe that the way forward would be to nurture them properly. With proper guidance and a perfect mixture of youth and experience India could move forward with pride and power.
