Ummey Al Hasan Backs Husband Shakib Al Hasan Saying It’s A Plot To “Portray Him As A Villain”

Ummey Al Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan’s wife, has come out in support of her husband after Bangladesh’s star cricketer kicked stumps and argued with umpires during a Dhaka Premier League match on Friday. Playing for Mohammedan Sporting’s against Abahani Limited, Shakib Al Hasan had a shocking on-field meltdown.

The cricketer kicked stumps and argued with umpires after his appeal of the leg before against Mushfiqur Rahim was turned down. Shakib Al Hasan plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). On the second occasion, he ran from his mid-off position to uproot all the stumps at the non-striker’s end when the two match officials called for a rain-break.

Off the last ball of the fifth over, Shakib Al Hasan struck Mushfiqur Rahim on the pads, only for umpire Imran Parvez to turn down the appeal. Shakib Al Hasan immediately kicked the stumps at the non-striker’s end and argued with the umpire, with some of the Mohammedan Sporting players surrounding the pair. Then the fielders moved on as it was the end of the over.

Then, after the fifth ball of the sixth over, umpire Mahfuzur Rahman indicated to the groundsmen to bring on the covers as a light rain had begun. Shakib Al Hasan ran in towards the umpire from his fielding position and ripped out all the three stumps from the non-strikers’ end and flung them on the ground.

Shakib Al Hasan, 34, later apologized and said, “I am extremely sorry for losing my temper and ruining the match for everyone and especially those who are watching from home. An experienced player like me should not have reacted that way but sometimes against all odds it happens unfortunately.”

The 34-year-old’s anger got the better of him during his Mohammedan Sporting franchise’s game against Abahani Limited. The DPL encounter was eventually won by his team via the Duckworth-Lewis method. In scenes rarely seen at a top-level cricket match, Shakib Al Hasan’s temper flared up on two different occasions in one Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match on Friday as he first kicked the stumps, and later uprooted a whole set of them and flung them to the ground.

But his wife Ummey Al Hasan backed her husband and said that it was a plot to portray Shakib Al Hasan as a ‘villain’. In a Facebook post, Ummey Al Hasan also raised doubts about the decision of the umpires.

“I’m enjoying this incident as much as the media is, finally some news on tv! It is great to see the support of the people who can see the clear picture of today’s incident at least someone has the guts to stand against all odds. However, it is sad to see the main issue getting buried by the media highlighting only the anger that he showed,” Ummey Al Hasan said.

“The main issue is the ongoing eye-catching decisions of the umpires! The headlines are really saddening. To me, it is a plot against him that has been going on for a while to portray him as the villain in all circumstances! If you are a cricket lover beware of your actions!” Ummey Al Hasan wrote.

Shakib Al Hasan has scored over 10,000 international runs and picked nearly 600 wickets across formats and is considered one of the finest spin bowling all-rounders in contemporary cricket. Shakib Al Hasan had earlier hit the headlines for wrong reasons in 2019 when he was slapped with a two-year ban, one year suspended, for not reporting a corrupt approach.

A day after top Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan drew a lot of flak on social media for his on-field behaviour, his wife Ummey Al Hasan came to the all-rounder’s defence. Shakib Al Hasan’s wife Ummey Al Hasan called the criticism and reports ‘a plot’ against the former Bangladesh captain to ‘portray him as the villain.’
