Video: Ian Botham intentionally ran out his partner Geoffrey Boycott
It was the fourth day of second test between England and New Zealand in 1978. In the first test, England was humilated by New Zealand when England was all out for just 64 when they were chasing 137. Boycott was critisized a lot after his very slow innings in the first inning of first test.
In the 2nd test, England took a lead of 183 runs but needed attacking batting to give New Zealand a tough target in the limited time. Boycott again was batting in his usual style(very slow). England were in the need of fast runs. So when the 2nd wicket fell, Botham was send as a pinch hitter and a special message from his captain Bob Willis. The message was to run out Boycott since he was playing too slow. When the right time came, Botham ran out Boycott. He asked him for a single that doesn’t existed and Boycott was run out.
