Virat Kohli Speaks On BCCI’s Decision To Invite Applications For Chief Coach

India skipper Virat Kohli has given his verdict on the BCCI’s decision to ask for applications for the chief coach’s post with current head coach Anil Kumble’s contract expiring at the end of ICC Champions Trophy.

Despite tasting good success so far, Kumble will have to go through the prescribed procedure and compete with fellow applicants if he is looking to extend his stint with the team, as the BCCI is keen to ensure a fair and completely transparent process.

And Kohli is not surprised by the move. Backing the board’s move, the 28-year old said that the BCCI is inviting fresh application for chief coach’s post only to continue the long-existing process.

“The process has been followed every single time the similar way and for the past so many years is what I know. Even the last time, the post was up for a change, the same procedure was applied. And the term being one year, obviously, the procedure is being followed in the same manner,” Kohli said during a press conference in London.

“So I don’t see anything very different from what has happened in the past. And that’s something that the board has obviously recognised. And they want to follow the same patterns,” he added.

Kohli also said that he does not have any other information regarding the whole development.

“So, yeah, I literally don’t have any more information on it because there is a committee that takes those decisions, and they’re following the same pattern that’s been followed in the past as well,” the skipper said.

When asked specifically about Kumble’s contribution, Kohli said that when a team performs well, it is due to the equal contribution from all the members.

Kumble was appointed as the head coach in June last year and began his term with a 2-0 Test series victory in West Indies. In the following mammoth home season, the Virat Kohli-led side won 10 Tests, registering series victories over New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia, respectively.

India also won the limited-overs series against New Zealand and England.

“Obviously, when you have results come your way, the contribution is from every part of the team. It’s not from a single source, to say the least. Everyone works hard equally, if not more than the other person,” Kohli said.

The new coach will be selected in a similar process that saw Kumble leaving behind other competitors to land the coaching job last year. After the applicants apply for the post, they will be reviewed by the board’s three-member panel, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

The trio will conduct interviews and seek presentations before selecting the next coach.
