Virender Sehwag Reacts To BCCI’s Decision To Drop MS Dhoni From Central Contract List
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided against handing a central contract to MS Dhoni. The BCCI’s decision has drawn mixed reactions as few feel that Dhoni should have been in the list since he is in the scheme of things for T20 World Cup while for others, BCCI made the correct decision as Dhoni hasn’t played any form of cricket since July 2019. Dhoni, even without a contract, can make a comeback but he has a tough road ahead.
Reacting to BCCI’s decision to keep him out of the central contract, former India opener Virender Sehwag said he wasn’t surprised with the latest update and added that selectors have probably made up their mind that they won’t select him (Dhoni).
“No. Not at all (on being asked if he is surprised by BCCI’s decision) because he hasn’t played any form of cricket since World Cup 2019 so no surprises here. He has retired from Tests, they don’t play him in one-days and there’s only one format left. It isn’t also confirmed whether they would play him again. Selectors have probably made up their mind that they will not select MS Dhoni. So BCCI also made its mind. The grades are created by selectors and they might have thought that since they will not pick Dhoni, it will be ideal to include him. It’s correct. It’s a clear message for MS that you can call it quits whenever you feel like,” he told Cricbuzz.
Dhoni may not have played any competitive match since World Cup but as India head coach Ravi Shastri said, he can make his comeback for T20 World Cup if he does well in IPL.
Dhoni himself hasn’t said a word on his retirement. He missed West Indies, South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and West Indies series. He isn’t a part of the Ne Zealand tour as well. Now since he doesn’t have a contract, fans should not expect him to make a comeback for South Africa series too.
Shastri may have said that Dhoni will be back if he does well in IPL but from outside, it might not be the case as India have number of players available who can take his place.
Apart from Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Ambati Rayudu and Khaleel Ahmed were other three players to lose their central contracts.
