Wankhede Stadium will host the Irani Cup 2016/17 from January 18 to 22 between the winner of the final of the Ranji Trophy and Rest of the India squad.
“We will host the Irani Cup match at the Wankhede”, said Mumbai Cricket Association vice president, Vinod Deshpande on Thursday.
Currently, the final of Ranji Trophy between Gujarat and Mumbai is in operation with both the teams having an equal chance of winning the game as we have witnessed play of more than four days but still, no team has come up with a clear winner. Though Gujarat possesses a first innings lead over Mumbai but still it’s anybody’s game.
The Indian selectors will announce the squad for Irani Cup on January 14, which is also the last day of the Ranji Trophy 2016/17. Currently, Rest of India team holds the gain over Irani cup as they chased down a mammoth total of 480 on the final day of Irani Cup last year. Rest of India rode on a century from Faiz Fazal and a twin ninety from Karun Nair to clinch the Irani cup.
Players like Karun Nair, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan are the front runners to be named in the Rest of India squad for the five-day tournament.
