MS Dhoni had faced severe criticism for his slow knock in the first ODI against Australia. The former India wicketkeeper-batsman had come to the crease when India were reeling at 4 for 3 while chasing 288. Unsurprisingly, MS Dhoni as well as Rohit took their time early on as another wicket at that juncture would have pretty much ended India’s slim hopes.
But as the game progressed, Rohit started playing his shots. However, Dhoni continued to struggle from the other end due to which the required run-rate kept on mounting. Dhoni was eventually out after scoring a fighting 51. He consumed as many as 96 deliveries for his knock as the critics once again targeted him.
But on Tuesday, the legendary player once again showed why the team-management and the selectors have so much faith in him. He first impressed with the wicketkeeping gloves before making a winning contribution with the bat. The 37-year old scored an unbeaten fifty to take India home.. He came to the crease when India were in a precarious position despite skipper Virat Kohli looking in ominous form at the other end. India needed 139 off 118 deliveries when Dhoni joined Kohli at the crease and there were apprehensions that the World Cup-winning skipper’s knack of using too many deliveries early on can hurt India.
However, Dhoni was in his elements and mastered the chase by scoring 55 off 54 balls. He also hit a six on the first ball of the last over when India needed seven before taking a single to complete the win. The innings was a tight slap on the critics who have not squandered a single chance to take a shot at Dhoni. But then again Dhoni never loves to answer his critics back with his mouth or gestures and his gesture at the end of the game once again proved it.
Despite scoring a match-winning fifty, Dhoni did not show any emotions and walked back calmly in the dressing room even though the fans shouted his name continuously.
