The Eden Gardens, on Sunday, witnessed absolute carnage from Andre Russell. Chasing a daunting total of 182, Kolkata Knight Riders were looking set to start their IPL campaign with a loss.  The Knight Riders were off to the worst possible start, losing their hard-hitting opener Chris Lynn in the very second over. Nitish Rana and Robin Uthappa then steadied the ship with an 80-run stand. However , the Sunrisers once again took command of the proceedings by dismissing Uthappa and the dangerous Dinesh Karthik in quick succession to reduce the home team to 95 for 3 from 87 for 1.

Rana departed soon too. The equation was then down to an improbable 59 from the last four overs and this is when Andre Russell decided to take things in his own hands.

KKR needed 53 runs in the last three overs with Russell batting on 9 off 7 balls.  He then collected 40 runs of the 18th and 19th over including 21 from the 19th over bowled by the ever-reliable Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bring down the equation to 13 off the last over. Shubhman Gill hit two long sixes in the last over off Shakib Al Hasan to help the Knight Riders pull off a stunner.  Russell remained unbeaten on 49 off just 19 balls.

Russell then won over everyone once again by showing the softer side of his personality. After receiving his Man of the Match Award (MoM) and another for hitting the most sixes, he gifted the latter to the team’s special fan Harshul Goenka. Russell also posed for photographs with the fan before walking away.  Harshul is a Cerebral palsy patient who has been seen cheering the team every season.

Here is the clip showing the beautiful moment:

Meanwhile, earlier in the game, comeback man David Warner starred with the bat to help the Sunrisers Hyderabad post 181 for 3 in the allotted 20 overs.  He scored 85 off just 53 deliveries with the help of 9 fours and three sixes.   Opening the innings alongside IPL debutant Jonny Bairstow, Warner looked in his elements right from the time Knight Riders skipper asked the visitors to bat first.  He added 118 runs with Bairstow in just 65 deliveries to lay the foundation for a big total.

The southpaw then added 26 runs with Vijay Shankar before missing a well-deserved century by just 15 runs. Towards the end, Shankar’s quickfire knock of 40 not out helped Sunrisers post a big total of 181.
