In the coming days, India will get a measure of where does it rank when it comes to football. While the senior team has made some huge strides in recent times, it is the upcoming FIFA Under-17 World Cup that is undoubtedly going to give a sneak peek at how the future of Indian football is going to pan out.
With the likes of traditional powerhouses like Brazil, Germany, Spain and others featuring in the 24-team tournament that will be played across six venues between October 6-28, the Indian team does not hold any realistic chance of progressing far.
Well, it will be a bit absurd to expect more from the team which was not even there when India was surprisingly awarded the tournament by the sport’s governing body. In fact, it will be a huge achievement if the team manages to progress from its group which comprises of heavyweights like USA, Columbia, and Ghana.
But the country is still hoping for the team to do well, and the fans are all set to back the boys when they take on the teams in the much-awaited tournament. The overwhelming support that the players are receiving must have boosted their confidence and they have now received some words of encouragement from none other than Indian cricket team’s captain Virat Kohli.
The batting star took to Instagram to post his message for the youngsters.
“Our Under-17 team is taking part in the Under-17 FIFA World Cup which starts on October 6. Their first match is against team USA, I would like to wish them all the very best for the first game and the rest of the tournament. Go get it boys, make us proud,” Kohli said.
