Will We See Indian Players Playing In Pakistan After 9 Years?

With the International Cricket Council (ICC) firmly behind holding a series between World XI and Pakistan in Lahore later this year, the Indian cricketers might be seen playing on Pakistani soil after almost a decade. The Indian team last played in Pakistan during the 2008 Asia Cup when they lost against Sri Lanka in the final.

However, with ICC confirming its plans of sending a World XI team to Pakistan later this year for a three-match T20 series, the unthinkable proposition of seeing Indian players playing in the country on the other side of the border is very close to becoming a reality.

The ICC, on Friday (June 24), announced their plans of organising a series in Pakistan where barring Zimbabwe in 2015, no major Test team has toured the country since the attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in 2009.

“Plans for a World XI to play in Pakistan later this year continue to be developed as the ICC Board confirmed its support of Pakistan’s efforts to bring international cricket back to Pakistan,” said ICC in a statement after its board meeting in London this week.

“In light of this the Board agreed to support the staging of a Pakistan v World XI event in Lahore later this year, a three-game series of T20 games that will be accorded international status,” it added.

With political tensions escalating after every passing day, India and Pakistan have not played a full bilateral Test series since 2007 when the latter visited India for three Tests and five One-Day Internationals. They played a short series of three ODIs and two T20s in India in December 2012 but otherwise, both have faced each other only in the ICC organised events or the Asia Cup.

Recently, they played two games in the Champions Trophy with India beating Pakistan in the group stage before the latter settled the account by thrashing the Men in Blue in the final to win their maiden tournament.
